Combat Hopelessness, Cynicism & Suicide

This classic film is not just a heartwarming holiday tale; it serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the immeasurable worth of every individual. The George Bailey Was Never Born podcast is dedicated to combatting hopelessness and bringing awareness to suicide prevention. But what can you do?

If you or someone you know are feeling like you’re “on the bridge,” please call the AFSP’s Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 into your phone, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting 741-741.

The “real life George Bailey'' of Seneca Falls, Menzo Case, was passionate about affordable housing and served as a board member to the Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County, leaving a lasting impact on Seneca Falls. We encourage making a donation, fundraising, or volunteering for your local Habitat for Humanity. Celebrate George Bailey Day!

DECEMBER 9, 2023

In 1971, David White and Christopher Little reunited after being away at college. They were about to end their evening when they stumbled upon a mostly unknown film, It’s A Wonderful Life. That seemingly ambiguous December night in New York City sparked a decade-long viewing party amongst friends that eventually helped make the film the success it is today (but you can hear all about how their party launched the movie from obscurity to an American icon in Episode One).

The second Saturday of December has been declared George Bailey Day. We encourage you to support the “George Baileys” in your life by hosting an It’s A Wonderful Life themed party inspired by David White and Christopher Little’s tradition. Here’s how:

1. Set the date!
The first ever George Bailey Day will take place on Dec. 9th, 2023.

2. Find the perfect food and drink!
David and Christopher suggest ham sandwiches with cheap bourbon and scotch to wash it down.

3. Invite a George Bailey
Invite a special guest who has had a particularly hard year to be celebrated (but shhhhh don’t let them know).

4. Watch It’s A Wonderful Life!
David and Christopher ONLY allowed the film to be watched at the party.

5. Make it an annual celebration!
Invite back the same guests year after year and watch the party grow. Just make sure no one misses the fun.

Share your George Bailey Day parties by tagging @savegeorgebailey and using the hashtag #savegeorgebailey and #georgebaileyday!

Fight for a Couple Decent Rooms & a Bath

The film sheds light on the predatory practices of Mr. Potter, who aimed to monopolize the housing market and exploit the working class. Affordable housing challenges are multifaceted and can include issues such as high rents, limited supply, and discrimination. To combat these problems, we encourage you to educate yourself about the root causes, local policies, and the impact it has on your local communities. It is also important to learn to recognize exploitative practices, so you can take steps to address and prevent them. Exploitative practices in the housing market can include predatory lending, discriminatory rental policies, and monopolistic behavior by landlords or corporations.

George Bailey's commitment to providing "a couple of decent rooms and a bath" represents the fight for dignity, security, and the chance to achieve the American dream. Together, we can honor George's legacy and continue the battle for affordable housing.
